We are and you can be: the Volunteers!

Before you decide volunteering with the working boats isn't for you, please take a read of our testimonials!

Volunteers are the life blood of the working boats now. Overseen by paid Volunteer Managers from British Waterways, we are the people working the events and crewing the boats of the fleet from place to place. We keep them in working order and spick and span! And we share our love of the waterway life with the people who'll take care of them in the future. The folks at BW beg us to return season after season! And since we like it so much, we do.

Would you like to become a volunteer? All you need is a little (or a lot) of time, and an idea that you might enjoy the past, present or future of narrow boats. That's really it! We don't ask that you're an expert or a novice and we don't mind if you're young or old - we just want YOU.

Become a subscriber

These boats, they're expensive. To become a subscriber or subscribing volunteer, please complete the form below. We're looking forward to welcoming you!

Under 18 subscriptions – we're very keen to have you on board - and we can - but we're sorry! You will need to subscribe with an adult, who will be responsible for you. There are also certain tasks that we'll be unable to ask you to do. Please, if you're keen: don't let this put you off! We either do it this way or go back to the old child labour laws, and.. do you feel like twelve hours of physical toil today?

Please note: As a volunteering subscriber you must comply with all BW policies that are imposed.

All BW volunteers must agree by signing a volunteer agreement to comply with BW safety policies and follow the BW management of Volunteers Directive.

Subscription costs:
£20 for 12 months subscription
£30 for 12 months joint subscription (you must reside at the same address)

(When you submit your subscription form, you will be contacted within 14 days detailing further subscription details such as payment information and your volunteer agreement form)
